Death Valley NP, California December 2012
The National Park Service provides directions for four different ways for leaving Las Vegas. We chose the scenic route, taking us from the south end up the valley to Furnace Creek.
Along the way, we passed through a couple of very small, very isolated "towns." The most hopping place was Shoshone, CA. Apparently, not much has changed in half a century, except the price of gas.
Death Valley is bordered to the west by the Sierras. We passed over a couple of passes, one as high as 3300 feet before dropping down to below sea level.
It is quite lovely, but very much a wintertime park. The restrooms have a urine dehydration chart. I wonder what the foreign visitors (there are a lot) think of that.
On the subject of dehydration, this is the first park I've been to where wicking fitness-type shirts are sold in the gift shop.
Heading out to the 49er Cafe for dinner - I think it must be a state law that every desolate place in California must have something with "49" in it.
Signing off from 190 feet below sea level.
