Itinerary - in great detail

Iceland August -September 2012

This trip is planned to within an inch of its life. That's what the Wheatfields do.

First, some demographics, for perspective & to answer some common questions .....

Iceland has a population of just over 300,000. The capital of Reykjavik is around 120,000 and the next largest town is about 30,000. Most of the country is quite rural. However, because of the high literacy rate (99.9%) and the general remoteness, it is wired, very wired. Internet access is plentiful.

The weather is quite temperate. Even though Iceland sits right below the Arctic Circle, the warm North Atlantic Current ensures generally moderate temperatures. The average for August and September are low 40's to upper 50's. Coming from 100+ temps, this is welcomed. The weather can be drizzly, but heavy rain is rare - it's the "Seattle of the North Atlantic."

The overview ....

We arrive early on the morning of Monday, August 27. After spending a few days in Reykjavik, we pick up the rental car and head southeast along the southern half of the country. The eastern most point of our journey is Höfn. (Icelanders drive on the right side of the road and the car has a GPS. We should be fine. But, to be safe, John is carrying an old fashion compass.)

Now, for the details ....

More on the 27th!

P.S. We also have a phone app to help translate the language. Otherwise, who knows what we'll be eating.

  2. Make sure to savor the hot dogs. They are a common snack all over Iceland (the other Nordic countries as well). The crushed Doritos give them some real crunch. Enjoy!
